Post subject: Why the sexual inuendos?
PostPosted: Mon Feb 16, 2004 4:13 pm
I really like this game. However, on the last campaign mission I just beat, the female assistant chimes in after the win with something to the effect of 'well done. I'll reward you later in person....if you like'

My question is: Is that necessary? With just one gratutious sexual inuendo, you make it so that some of us have second thought about how appropriate it is to let our kids play the game.

Dont get me wrong. The game is fun and challenging, but why ruin an otherwise fun game? Things like that do not in any way add to the enjoyment of playing or to story line or anything, so why have it?

Maestro

i lke the sound in this game and this specific phrase is very amusing :D
nothing bad in it...i suppose the children if they play wont even understand it.
And btw why you think there is any "sexual inuendo" may be girl is going to reward you by preparing a perfect dinner or something
:P

:-?

You're joking right? It doesn't add anything to the enjoyment of the game? Hearing that voice is the single largest motivator I have to doing the scenarios........women with Russian accents, arghghghgghgh :P

Must be all those Bond movies I saw as a kid.

Oh come on. What world do you live in? You know as well as I do that is the first thing people will think when they hear that.

As far as the accent goes, yeah I liked it. Its the phrase that I was talking about, not the accent.

2 Maestro - same question for you - what world do you live in?
if a kid is so small that he not know what sex means yet- he wont understand that
but if a kid already know what sex means - man he WILL find way for himself to get enough info about that (lol) and i suppose just one phrase in game wont do any harm to him.So what's the problem you speak about?
btw want to hear a joke :D
Question - can you speak about sex with 14-year old girl?
Answer - yes, you can if you want to learn something new
:P
2 Khanivore - btw is russian accent there so strong that it is so easily identifiable? hmm

Well I gotta say thanks for not flaming me on this one. I guess the two of us disagree a little bit and I can respect that. I just think that in a wargame, that is rather blatently gratuitous and unnecessary. Yes, they can and do see and hear far too much these days imho. Its just sad that I cant even get away from it in something so innocent as a wargame.

2 maestro - how old are you ?
and btw - why do you think that wargame is "innocent" thingie? actually it is about war and war is about death and destruction.so do you think that for a kid shooting and blowing stuff is okay but a very mild joke like "i will reward you personally" is not okay?

(no offence but i think that parents are a bit paranoid in their attempts to cut their children from anything which reminds about sex while that never helps and kids know everything very early anyway. This makes me laugh  )

and can you plz explain to me what "blatently gratuitous" means - my english is not good enough to understand what you want to say.

I find that particular phrase very cute :)

If you're worried about what influence a game has on kids, I can't understand why you'd let kids play a game about killing but not if it has a sexy female voice hinting at some fun afterwards.. I mean, what's worse, a person getting killed or a person getting laid (it's quite simple, really. In RL, violence=bad, sex=good :) )? Violence is far more serious than sex.

2 Mrakobes: Yes, the accent is very distinctively Eastern European or Russian, both in the pronunciation and the phrasing.

"blatently" - Obviously.
"gratuitous" - unnecessary.

The phrase "blatently gratuitous" is usually used in situations where something that was included purely to appeal to a desire, in this case, sex.

I agree with you Maestro. Unfortunately, we're the few. You're never going to win this argument with a group of mostly young gamers.

I believe Yeats was right... 'the best lack all conviction, while the worst are filled by passionate intensity.'

I wouldn't be surprised if age has less to do with how people feel about this than where they live in the world. It seems the "culture" in some countries consider sex worse than violence. That's not the case where I come from.

And anyway, can't you just tell the kids she's talking about making you dinner or something? :)

Unless you shelter your kids under a rock, chances are they're going to find out about sex from the peers in public schools (even if its a 'private school' its still public in the sense of the word, unless you home school them) Chances are they're going to understand at least a little about sex by age 13, give or take a year or two.

Which brings the next question, how young are your kids, anyways?
And why is sex so bad and evil, yet war and destruction are suitable for your young children?

I'm with Maestro on this one as well. I don't see why this innuendo was necessary.

This is a game of war, we know that. If people are concerned about individial tanks blowing up other tanks they would not have bought this game. The violence in this game is very impersonal. But sexual references have no place here.

My view is that as parents, our responsibility is not to shelter our kids from all negative influences out there, it is quite impossible in the world today. Our responsibility is to help our kids make good decisions when they confront these things. Loose morals lead to a degredation of society as a whole and individually. We find that from history, such as in Rome.

LOL
Maelstrom do you really think that situation with morale in current US is significanlty better than in Rome? even late Rome had not such a huge pornography industry as US and at least Romanss were not introducing all those crazy laws about protecting rights of homosexuals and stuff.

Heh, we're getting into some deep stuff here, and definately off topic :). Yeah, I certainly do know it, I live right near San Francisco. But what can you do? Its like it is because a large amount of people want it that way. Doesn't mean we all have to join in though.

Yeah, God forbid that you treat people well that are different from you. I don't like it or agree with it so lets strip you of your rights. In addition, we all know that there is no porn outside of America. Europe, Asia et al are bastions of purity.

I hope the sarcasm is evident.

Fortunately not. :)

I would not have any problems letting kids play this game. And if I'd had problems, it would have been because of the killing. It's been said before, but I'll say it again: If you let your kids play a violent game, but then hesitate to let them play a game which _hints_ towards something that seems like sexuality, you've got your priorities wrong, as a parent. That's my personal opinion, and it's my opinion as a person who's been through four years of education on how to work with kids.

I joked about it earlier, but violence _is_ worse than sex. It's really blatantly obvious that violent games and movies have a far more dangerous impact on kids than games and movies which feature depictions of sex - and not just a silly little sentence about someone being rewarded later. Ofcourse, kids should be sheltered from the adult world, but if you're going to make an effort to do so, then focus on what's important first.
